Le Christianisme en promulguant les livres saints restés en fouis jusqu'alors chez une nation obscure a fait connaitre au monde une histoire des hommes et de l'univers différente de tout ce que les autres nations avaient reçu par la tradition On a dû naturellement chercher à voir si les récits de Moïse s'acoerdaient avec les explications des phénomènes; mais le peu de progrès que, faute d'instruments les anciens avaient faits dans l'étude des sciences ont rendu vaines toutes les tentatives par lesquelles on a voulu démontrer l'accord qui doit régner entre les théories de la science et les narrations de l'écrivain inspiré. Ce n'est que dans ces derniers temps que les travaux des savants ont enfin permis d'embrasser d'un regard les rapports qui existent entre les diverses branches des connaissances humaines.
