Excerpt from Philadelphia Medical Times, Vol. 7: A Bi-Weekly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science; December 23, 1876
Very trifling operations sometimes are fol lowed by most unpleasant consequences. I have just mentioned that in two cases lately, death followed vaccination, apparently from pyaemia. A case of death following a hypo dermic injection is just recorded. A lady who had fallen into the habit of injecting morphine to relieve sickness to which she was very lia ble, was seized with tetanus and died. It transpired that she was scarred with marks of old injections, as well as bearing marks Of recent origin and in a wardrobe were found a number of phials Of solution of morphine, an injection-syringe, and several rusty steel needles. The use of the latter led to the un fortunate consequences. This case teaches another lesson, viz., the spreading habit of secretly resorting to the hypodermic use of morphia,-the most dangerous Of all forms of narcotic indulgence.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history, symptoms, and treatments for conditions that were believed to be caused by maternal impressions during pregnancy. It includes 47 cases collected by the author, which describe the deformities and arrest of development seen in children of mothers who had been frightened or experienced hardship while pregnant. The text begins with research from 1775 and continues through the 19th century, ultimately revealing the author's belief that all fetal abnormalities are caused by the conditions of conception and the health of the parents, rather than maternal impressions. The author concludes that, while the imagination may affect a mother's health and the health of her child, it is not the cause of deformities. This book will interest medical historians and anyone seeking insight into 18th and 19th-century medical views.
