Excerpt from The Last Years of the Protectorate, 1656-1658, Vol. 1: 1656-1657
These volumes are intended to be a continuation of the History of the Commonwealth and Protectorate,' which Dr. S. R. Gardiner left unfinished. The third volume of his book was published in 1901, just before he fell ill. The only portion of the projected fourth volume which he left in a sufficiently advanced state for publica tion was the chapter on the Parliamentary Elections of 1656, published separately in 1903. I cannot refrain from expressing once more the regret felt by all students of English history that Dr. Gardiner was not spared to complete the book to which he devoted so many years, and to give the world his final estimate of the aims and achievements of the Protector. A continuation by another hand has necessarily many defects. Though this was undertaken in accordance with Dr. Gardiner's wishes, I am conscious that I do not possess either the comprehensive knowledge or the perfect equipment which he brought to his task.

This book explores the tumultuous final years of Oliver Cromwell's rule as Lord Protector of England, a period marked by both internal strife and international conflict. The author, drawing on a wealth of primary sources, delves into the complexities of Cromwell's political maneuvering, his efforts to balance military authority with the aspirations of Parliament, and the evolving landscape of English society under his rule. The book examines the Protector's attempts to reconcile his own political ambitions with the various factions vying for power, including the Royalists, the Levellers, and the republican "Commonwealths men". The author sheds light on the events surrounding Cromwell's second Parliament, including the controversial exclusion of members deemed disloyal to the Protectorate, and the debate surrounding the possibility of a monarchy. Through detailed accounts of both domestic politics and foreign policy, including the war with Spain and Cromwell's involvement in the Northern War, the book paints a vivid picture of a period of intense social and political upheaval, revealing the challenges and complexities of establishing a stable and lasting government in England in the aftermath of the Civil War. The author's meticulous research provides a rich and insightful narrative that helps us to understand the forces that shaped this crucial chapter in English history.
