L'essentiel est de ne pas transformer l'histoire en arme de parti; oeuvre de vérité, elle est tenue de demeurer calme dans ses enthousiasmes, sereine dans ses indignations, impartiale toujours. Mais l'impartialité n'exclut pas les préférences; seulement n'altérez pas les textes au profit de vos élus; ne supprimez rien, ne déguisez rien, et surtout ne vous appuyez jamais sur des documents équivoques, suspects et de mauvaise foi.
