Excerpt from Alumni Report, Vol. 36: April, 1900
Taking a train at Naples, Southern Italy, Pompeii is reached after a ride of about 12 miles, the railroad running along the shore of the beautiful Bay of Naples, through fig orchards, vineyards and cactus growths, which appear not unlike our own prickly pear, but standing often 10. Feet high. These are apparently cultivated for a large red, berry-like fruit, clinging to them as clusters of grapes, the peasantry suspending them in great bunches over their doorways.
Immediately on reaching the insignificant town of modern Pompeii, one is besieged by a small army of uncouth-looking Italians, all anxious to act as guides up to the crater of Mount Vesuvius.
One is early warned, however, against the employment of this dangerous set, some of whom might not hesitate to rob or mur der a stranger while making such a long, lonely journey on horseback.
