Prendre pour mot d'ordre à la fois religieux et politique l'eterne1, et lui seul, est notre Dieu, à nous Israéli tes, et nous Israélites, nous sommes dans un sens tout particulier le peuple de l'eternel rendre ainsi l'exis tence nationale étroitement solidaire de la foi en un seul et même Dieu, et mettre ce Dieu - là en relation cons tante avec les intérêts, les besoins, les destinées de ce peuple particulier, de cette communauté nationale, non certes, ce n'était pas créer du premier coup une cité de Dieu idéale, comme celle dont Jésus est venu poser les fondements, et qui, d'ailleurs, aujourd'hui même, n'est pas encore réalisée sur la terre. Ce n'était qu'un premier commencement, mais le meilleur commencement pos sible.
