Pour faire comme tout le monde, je dirai donc au lecteur que j'ai voulu és sayer d'achever quelques - uns des por traits dont les esquisses sont dans les mémoires de Tallemant des Réaux et du duc de Saint - Simon. De même qu'un peintre serait obligé, s'il voulait mettre sur la toile ces personnages de chercher leurs costumes et'la couleur de leurs étoffes; j'ai pensé que pour les bien ren dre, il fallait recourir à leur langage; c'est pourquoi je me suis efforcé de ne point écrire une ligne qui ne fût de leur style. C'était une tâche embarrassante, àcause des changemens qu'a subis notre langue entre le règne de Henri IV, où commence le dix - septième siècle, et celui de Louis XIV où il finit. J e n'espère point n'avoir pas laissé de disparates; mais l'e 'tude m'en a été si agréable, qu'elle suffirait à me consoler d'un mauvais succès.
