Il n'avait ja mais été ni tout a fait pour les gouvernements qui s'étaient succédé, ni entièrement contre, étant vraiment un sage et d'un parti fort supe rieur a tous les partis, celui de la raison. Il di sait lui - même qu'il n'avait jamais crié ni Vive la République ni Vive la Monarchie ou Vive le Roi ni Vive l'empereur Nul lement indifférent pour cela, ou pusillanime. La haine du désordre républicain ne l'avait point jeté dans la réaction; il avait voté le 10 dé cembre 1818 pour le général Cavaignac; et aux plébiscites qui su1v1rent le coup d'état de dé cembre 1851, il avait Voté non. Il expliqua ces votes à l'empereur, qui lui assura qu'il les come prenait fort bien. L'empereur le prit comme il était. Cela fait honneur à tous deux.
