Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book of Christian hymnody, a paraphrase of David's Psalms in the language of the New Testament, was intended by the author to both refine public psalmody and assist private devotion. The author's aim was to render the Psalms more easily understood by Christians of his own time, and he felt that in doing so, his work could also be used to great effect in private worship. The author voiced frustration with the use of psalms that were obscure and overly Jewish and felt his work remedied this issue. By the work's sixth edition, the author had published a companion piece that extended his paraphrase of the Psalms to include all 150. The author hoped that this book and its companion volume would be sufficient for the needs of most Christian churches. The author wrote with the intention of appealing to a wide swath of the Christian community, avoiding controversial topics that might divide readers, and used language that would appeal to both the learned and the unlearned. Though the author humbly admitted that he was not perfect, he hoped that his work would be received as an offering to God and that it would be used to the edification of Christian souls.
