Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: Cocoa; October 1984
World cocoa bean grindings in calendar 1984 are estimated at a record million tons, compared with million tons a year earlier. Grindings in 1985 are forecast to closely approximate those of 1984. If production and grind estimates are realized, world stocks will increase by tons in 1985, following 2 straight years of inventory reductions. Based on the current rate of consumption, world carryover' stocks of cocoa beans at the close of the season were estimated at about a 3-month supply, down from a 4-month supply, as of September 30, 1983.
Cocoa bean prices (the average of the daily closing price of the nearest 3 active futures trading months on the New York market) have averaged per ton during the january-september 1984 period, up from during calendar 1983 and well above the 1982 average of per ton. Cocoa prices were high during the early months of 1984 in response to a tight supply situation, but have since declined as the new crop season approached.
The 1980 International Cocoa Agreement (igga) was extended for a l-year period because members were unable to successfully conclude negotiations for a new igga. Thus, the 2 cents per pound levy and the intervention price range of per pound will remain in effect until September 30, 1985. A Negotiating Conference was held in Geneva, October 8-26, 1984, in continuing efforts to develop a new igga.
