What you must remember about Jonathan Barlow Gee is that he was never completely comfortable with anything. He was never completely comfortable with his surroundings, and was often found staring off into space, contemplating the unknown depths of his psyche. He was never completely comfortable with himself, and while his friends all matured themselves through social interaction, Jon remained quiet, aloof, and contemplative. He was outspoken, and often misunderstood, but he appeared largely directionless throughout most of his formative youth.
