Gertrude Hilbert was born January 23, 1873 in Jonesborough, Tennessee and began teaching grade school when she was only 16-years-old in Cabool, Missouri. At 19, she married a grocery store owner, George Washington Dove. They had two children, Marguerite and Harold. When Marguerite was 4-years-old and Harold, 18-months-old, the marriage ended. Gert and her children moved West in 1899 to live with her Aunt Cornelia and Uncle Ernest Hopkins. They had homesteaded in Dayton, Washington. Gertrude left her children with her Aunt Cornelia to work for the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin Newspaper while studying Education at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Gert's goal was to obtain a college degree to support her children on her own. But not seeing it soon happening, Cornelia refused to give up the children and legally adopted Gert's children. As Gert continued to visit Marguerite and Harold, they knew her only as "Auntie Gert," not realizing she was really their biological mother. Eventually Marguerite and Harold were told their Aunt Gert was really their mother. Through time and effort, they accepted her as their mother, and cared for Gertrude through the years. Gertrude began teaching in Walla Walla County in 1913, later returning to Whitman College and graduating with an Education degree in 1921. She taught in the Mill Creek and Walla Walla School Districts and for Russell Creek, Springdale, Rullo and Blue Creek Schools. She later married Charles Wright making her home at Mill Creek near Walla Walla. Gert was a member of the Bee Hive Rebecca Lodge, the First Congregational Church of Walla Walla, and the Dayton Grange. After an exciting and interesting life, she died in 1940 of liver cancer at the age of 67. We, her family, are overjoyed to be able to bring Auntie Gert's stories to life once again...
