E. M. Forster (1879-1970) è stato un romanziere, scrittore di racconti, saggista e librettista inglese. È conosciuto soprattutto per i suoi romanzi ironici e ben tracciati che esaminano la differenza di classe e l"ipocrisia nella società britannica dell"inizio del XX secolo. L'impulso umanistico di Forster verso la comprensione e la simpatia può essere giustamente riassunto nell'epigrafe del suo romanzo del 1910, Howards End: "Connettiti solo...". Il suo romanzo del 1908, Una stanza con vista, è il suo lavoro più ottimista, mentre A Passage to India (1924) gli ha portato il suo più grande successo.
Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1909, il breve lavoro di fantascienza di Forster, "La macchina si ferma", postula un'umanità dipendente dalla tecnologia che ora vive sottoterra, ogni sua esigenza servita dalle macchine.
