Excerpt from General Mathematics
6. One of the most curious characteristics of American secondary-mathematics instruction is the obscurity in the teaching of the function notion. It is generally agreed that functional thinking (the dependence of one magnitude upon another) constitutes one of the most fundamental notions of mathematics. Because of the interrelations of the equation, the formula, the function, the graph, and the geometric relations inductively acquired, the material is easily correlated around the function idea as the organizing and unifying principle. The function concept (implicitly or explicitly) dominant throughout helps to lend concreteness and coherence to the subject. However, it would be false to assume that this material is presented to establish the principle of correlation. On the contrary, it happens that correlation around the function notion, though incidental, is a valuable instrument for accomplishing the larger aim, which is to obtain a composite introductory course in mathe maties that all future citizens of our democracy should be required to take as a matter of general scholarship.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the realm of introductory mathematics, aiming to provide a comprehensive and engaging course for the betterment of quantitative thinking and expression. The author, a leading expert in the field, believes that traditional mathematics education should be revitalized and socialized to meet the demands of present-day education. This book is not merely a collection of abstract mathematical concepts but also a tool for understanding and interacting with the quantitative world in which we live. The author presents a new method of attack on a problem, enabling the reader to solve many problems that would be very difficult, if not impossible, without using this tool. The book is organized around the concept of the equation and function, providing a framework for understanding the interdependence of one magnitude upon another. This approach has been proven to be relatively simple and easy to present, making it an excellent resource for both experienced teachers and inexperienced teachers who are new to teaching this subject. The author has extensively used the material in this book in mimeographed form, with excellent results. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
