Sinossi

National bestseller

"Kelly Oxford's writing is hillarious and fearless. She's the badass Canadian sister I never had." Mindy Kaling

One of The Globe and Mail’s “Most Anticipated Books of 2017” * One of InStyle’s “5 Totally Brilliant Books You Need to Read in April 2017” * One of Newsweek’s “The Best New Book Releases for April 18, 2017” * One of LadyGang’s “The 10 Books I Read on Vacation (and 9 You Should Read!)” * One of BookBub’s “18 of the Funniest Books Coming Out This Spring” * One of PureWow’s “5 Books We Can’t Wait to Read in April” * One of National Post’s “Five Essential Reads in Pop Culture for 2017” * One of Hello! Magazine’s “15 Buzzy Spring Books We Can’t Wait to Read” * One of East Company’s “Most Creative People in Business 2017”

The author of #1 Canadian and New York Times bestseller Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar returns with a deeper and even funnier new collection of essays about the pleasures and perils of living in Kelly Oxford’s head.

Kelly Oxford likes to blow up the Internet. Whether it’s with the kind of tweets that led Rolling Stone to name her one of the Funniest People on Twitter, with pictures of her hilariously adorable family (human and animal) or with something much more serious, like creating the hashtag #NotOkay, where millions of women came together to share their stories of sexual assault, Kelly has a unique, razor-sharp perspective on modern life. As a screenwriter, professional sh*t disturber, wife and mother of three, Kelly is about everything but the status quo.

Perfect for anyone who ever wished David Sedaris and Mindy Kaling would just finally write a book together already, When You Find Out the World Is Against You is filled with the biting, wise and laugh-out-loud insights that have won Kelly legions of fans. Whether she’s exploring the bittersweet boredom that so often accompanies parenthood, calling out the insanity of a posse of Internet poodle vigilantes, writing bracingly about the anxiety that has plagued her for as long as she can remember or taking us to ride shotgun as she stalks her husband on an accidental date with another man, When You Find Out the World Is Against You is Kelly at her best. Called “our present-day, funny Joan Didion” by filmmaker Gia Coppola, Kelly’s comedic skill, down-to-earth voice and bull’s-eye observations on the absurdity of modern life mean there is nothing quite like seeing the world through her eyes.

Dalla quarta di copertina

Things That Can Make You Feel Really Crappy (an abbreviated list):

  • When your mother tells you you’re going to camp, but then abandons you at a sketchy daycare, in the path of an oncoming tornado.
  • When you finally get to go to real camp one summer and hope it will make you a twelve-year-old “kissing bandit” but instead your eyebrows get pulled off in an unfortunate plaster mask accident.
  • When you realize that the pain in your armpits is just anxiety.
  • When you realize anxiety is far more crippling than pain in your armpits.
  • When you realize your kids are old enough to render
you obsolete—except when in need of new phones and/or jeans.
  • When your need to be needed makes you desire a poodle, and then poodle vigilantes totally attack you on the Internet for innocently proclaiming your love.
  • When you discover that the would-be leader of the country you now call home has said terrible things about women, on tape for the world to hear.

Things that Can Make You Feel a Bit Better:

  • Creating the hashtag #NotOkay, where millions of women came together to share their stories of sexual assault and fight back, and feel slightly less ashamed and alone.
  • Laughing at yourself. Laughing with other people.
  • Kelly Oxford is known as one of the Funniest People on the Internet (Rolling Stone) and a Social Media Powerhouse (NYT). When You Find Out the World Is Against You is a collection of stories drawn from all periods and aspects of Kelly’s life—her coming-of-age in Canada, her approach to marriage and motherhood, and what happens when you uproot your entire life to Los Angeles, a place as far in culture and climate from Canada as it gets.
  • While still full of the razor-sharp observations on modern life that made her first book, Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar, a New York Times bestseller and the laugh-out-loud situations that only Kelly Oxford could find herself in, When You Find Out the World Is Against You shows a writer and a woman tackling the harder, deeper, more important stuff of life too.
