Excerpt: ... DEDICATORY EXERCISES OF THE Simpson Annex, AT THE CITY HALL, FRIDAY EVENING, APRIL 28, '82. IJpon the stage were His Honor, Mayor Benjamin Hale, who presided, the Board of Aldermen, the President and members of the Common Council, the Directors of the Public Library, other officials, and Mr. Frank E. Simpson, the son of the principal donor. The exercises of the evening opened with music by the Adelphi orchestra--overture to the '-Golden Fleece," Ripley. Mayor Hale then made the following introductory adaress: MAYOR HALE'S ADDRESS. At a meeting of the Directors of the Public Library of this city, it was voted to call the lately finished addition to their building the Simpson Annex, as an acknowledgment of the generosity of its chief donor. It was also voted to celebrate the event of the completion of the Simpson Annex according to a programme prepared by the committee appointed for that purpose of which, Rev. Dr. Spaulding was chairman. After a few brief introductorv remarks--Edward S. Moseley, Esq., the treasurer of the building fund, and the successful manager of the enterprise, will make the financial statement, and then two of our fellow citizens eminent in the scholastic and literary world, will address you. Mr. Parton will unfold to you some things he has learned from a long and intimate study of books, and Dr. Fiske will make you acquainted with our own Library, and its affairs, of which he has ample knowledge, being a director of the oldest standings and the orator at the very inauguration of the enterprise. The need of a collection of books for the free use of the whole community was long felt in our country, but as the free Public Library was formerly almost unknown, various expedients were resorted to, to supply the need.
