After The First Shot is the second book of poetry ever released by Robert Benefiel under Poetastard Press. The work inside was considered for his first book Easy Battles For Lazy Armies (originally done through 4 AM Press), but was shelved by his first editor and publisher for a later release. After 14 years and with the advent of electronic books, cheaper print rates, and having learned how to create the books from scratch on his own from beginning to end, the author recompiled these works for print and distribution. Notable pieces such as 1/2, Cloistered, and The Symphony Writers having been written back in the early days of the writer's career were mixed with newer pieces of the time such as I Want A Scotch And They Want Mars and Through The Photographic Plate, creating a balanced theme for any reader who enjoys his work.

Robert Benefiel has been writing consistently for several decades. His writing is often about the absurdity and humor in life, as well as its painful and unpleasant sides. Many of his poems are inspired by true events, that either happened to him or others. He doesn’t pretend life is always great or horrible, but understands that those views of life and of his work are determined by forces beyond those of control most days. He has several more volumes of poetry that will be published in the following years to come.
