Sinossi

The Classification of Finite Simple Groups (CFSG), a major mathematics project involving hundreds of researchers, was largely completed by about 1983, says Smith, and since then, the result has had a huge influence on work in finite groups theory and in many adjacent fields of mathematics. Indeed, the application of CFSG has itself become a large and active research area, to which he contributes here. Lightly adapting a series of 10 two-hour lectures--mainly adding cross-references and literature citations suitable for a reference--he discusses such topics as an outline of the proof of CFSG: some main ideas, recognition theorems for simple groups, maximal subgroups and primitive representations, geometries for simple groups, and some applications further afield from finite groups.
