At the graduate student level, Joswig explains connections between tropical geometry and optimization. Bridging between these two areas of mathematics is fruitful in two ways, he says. First, through tropical geometry optimizations, algorithms become applicable to questions in algebraic geometry. Second, looking at topics in optimization through the tropical geometry lens adds another layer of structure. Among his topics are fields of power series and tropicalization, products of tropical polynomials and the Cayley Trick, combinatorics of tropical polytopes, tropical half-spaces, and matroids and tropical linear spaces.
