In 1978, West Bromich Albion - an unheralded club in the the old First Division - became the first British football team to field three black players, at a time when Britain was experiencing the greatest racial tensions in her history. Under the maverick management of the flamboyant Ron Atkinson, Regis and his teammates Laurie Cunningham and Brendan Batson, were christened 'The Three Degrees' and soon became symbols of the social change sweeping the country. At away games, however, Regis, Cunningham and Batson were booed, subjected to monkey chants and pelted with banana skins. Cunningham even had a petrol bomb thrown into his home. Finding courage in their condemnation both on and off the pitch, each was instrumental in making West Brom the most exciting team in the country.
