Finally reunited, this edition brings together How to Mix Drinks by Jerry Thomas with A Manual for the Manufacture of Cordials, Liquors, Fancy Syrups, etc. etc., by Christian Schultz as it originally was published in the 19th century. Many people mistakenly believe the cocktail is a modern invention often citing the Prohibition as the driving force for this liquid innovation. Thanks to The Bon-Vivant’s Companion, it can easily be established that a drink such as the Whiskey Smash has not changed in the last 150 years. Other recipes like the Raspberry Shrub have, thankfully some might say, disappeared from the modern bartenders repetoire. Whether used as a historic document, a bartending guide, or as the beginning of a lost weekend, this volume is not to be missed! Jerry Thomas, often called “the father of American mixology”, was a bartender who wrote the first cocktail recipe guide to be published in the United States. “The Professor” served drinks from New York to San Francisco and was known as much for his showmanship as for his beverages. His creativity, flashy style, and friendliness made him the ideal ambassador to bring cocktails to the masses. Christian Schultz was born in Berne, Switzerland. He spent 15 years in Switzerland learning the art of making liquors, syrups, cordials and, as he says “etc., etc.,”. He brought his recipes and skills to America and set up shop in New York City. At the time this volume was originally produced (1862), he offered to make any of his recipes in concentrate form for anyone who did not want to go to the trouble of making it themselves “at a low price, for cash.”
