This publication is an introduction to the methods of preparing soil and rock for foundations of structures including open, shaft, and tunnel excavation. The publication discusses excavation to a range of depths in a variety of soil and rock conditions which may be encountered at a single site. You will learn techniques for preparation of soils consisting of a wide spectrum of textures and water contents. The publication discusses approaches to managing groundwater when encountered during excavation and foundation preparation. You will learn about vibrocompaction, blasting, vibrodisplacement, vibroflotation, grouting, precompression, and reinforcement methods.

Paul Guyer is a registered mechanical engineer, civil engineer, fire protection engineer and architect with over 35 years experience in the design of buildings and related infrastructure. For an additional 9 years he was a principal advisor to the California Legislature on infrastructure and capital outlay issues. He is a graduate of Stanford University and has held numerous national, state and local offices with the American Society of Civil Engineers, Architectural Engineering Institute and National Society of Professional Engineers.
