Programming is widely promoted as an activity that stimulates logical thinking and provides a strong basis for personal and professional development. In particular, JavaScript is recognised as a good place to start. It is the programming language that is used to activate web pages and it is relatively easy to learn. The book starts with a treatment of HTML5 and Style Sheets. HTML5 is the most recent version of HTML, the Hypertext Markup Language used to write web pages, and combined with Style Sheets it provides the user interface for JavaScript applications. It also provides a graphical context that transforms JavaScript into a visual language that can support animations and games. These can be delivered in web pages to all types of devices, including mobiles. The approach is based on learning by example. This means you will learn to write HTML, Style Sheets and JavaScript code by reading lots of examples and explanations. It uses a narrative style so you can read without having to write code at the same time. However, it is also designed to provide a foundation for practical work so the treatment is firmly based on the software development procedures you are encouraged to use in your own projects. The treatment progresses from mainly theoretical to very practical topics and is backed up by increasingly ambitious applications. These start with a simple online quiz then move through an ebook, an interest calculator, an encryption application and a digital clock. The other chapters are all application-oriented and include a calculator simulation, an animation, an analog clock and a chess board with movable pieces. These are designed to work in any web page and in any browser, including mobile browsers.
