The French occultist calling himself Papus sought to provide a list of sources for his contemporaries to aid them in this eternal search. He also describes the frustrations faced by those people who tried to bring a spiritual perspective to the sciences. Indeed, Mme Blavatsky and the Theosophists, who are mentioned with admiration by the author, would soon spark a worldwide movement of such "scientists of the spirit." Drawing upon eastern religion and building on western occultism, these groups were the forerunners of the modern New Age movement.
