Excerpt from My Baseball Diary
In 1912, my Uncle Tom bought me a blue baseball suit. I liked it that the suit was blue. During those days, the White Sox wore blue suits on the road. Father Dondaville arranged to take a picture Of me in my suit, which he did in front of the parish house on Grand Boulevard. He had me squat like a catcher, with my hat turned around. I had a boy's catcher's mitt which cost about twenty-five cents. The picture is now lost, but I have frequently wished that I still had it. At home, the grownups laughed about the picture. But I believed that it gave me great importance. In the pic ture, my expression was so serious as to be funny.
