In the etymological remarks, the statement of the component parts of the word may often appear unnecessary, but it is given either as a reference to the components in their alphabetical order, or to prevent some anticipated ~misunderstanding of the construction of the word.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive study of the Pahlavi language, its development, history, grammar, and extant texts, written by the author, a well -respected scholar in the field. The Pahlavi language, belonging to the Iranian group of Indo -European languages, was the written language of the Sasanian Empire of Persia, a successor state to the Parthian Empire. It is of major importance linguistically as a precursor to modern Iranian languages (Farsi, Kurdish, etc.), and because a large proportion of Zoroastrian scripture is written in Pahlavi. This book argues that Pahlavi emerged from Old Persian (the language of the Achaemenid Empire) via Middle Persian (a poorly attested predecessor of Pahlavi), and through comparison with the grammar of Avestan (the language of the Avesta, Zoroaster's scripture, and the earliest Iranian text) the author posits several grammatical developments in the transition from Middle to New Persian, the Iranian language spoken today in Iran and several neighboring countries.
