It is included in collegiate courses in German be cause Of its literary value and its significance in the history Of German culture. It is not an easy work to comprehend. Some knowledge Of the philosophical movement of the eighteenth century, some familiarity with Lessing's life and his own religious development are essential to a thorough understanding Of its content alone.
