N. Grammar being a practical art, with the principles of whic every intelligent Person is more or less acquainted, it might be expected that a book written professedv v on the solucei. Should exhibit some evidence or its author's skill. But it mud seem that a multitude of bad or indifferent writers have judged theuwelves qualified to.tench the art ofspeaking and writing well; so that correctness of language and business of style are as ml to be found in grammars as in other man. There have been. However, several exce lent scholars, who have thought it an tddcct not unwor thy oi their talents. To prescribe and elucidate the principles of English Grammar. But these, for no obvious reason, have executed their designs with various degrees of success: and even the most meritorious have leil ample room for improvement, though some have evinced an ability which does honour to themselves, while it gives cause to regret their lack of an inducement to further labour. The mere grammarlan can neither aspire to praise. Nor stipulate for a reward; and to those who were best qualified to write. The subject could offer no adequate mailve for diligence.
