Excerpt from On the Amount of Internal Friction Developed in Rocks During Deformation and on the Relative Plasticity of Different Types of Rocks
The sense in which certain terms are used in this quotation is not quite clear, but we understand the question put forward by Dr. Gilbert to be as follows: A unit cube of any rock~ - granitc for instance - is submitted to pressure in a testing machine on the earth's surface. It will give away or break down under a certain load~ - this is termed its crush ing load.

Exploring a previously unexplored realm of knowledge, this book presents the results of extensive experiments on the flow of various rocks under different stresses. It is the first publication to furnish a detailed mathematical theory of the internal friction and limiting strength of rocks under conditions existing in the interior of the Earth. The author incorporates the concept of a modulus of plasticity, which expresses the ease with which a rock will flow under differential pressure, and demonstrates that this modulus of plasticity varies with the type of rock and the depth at which it is located within the Earth's crust. The book builds on earlier elastic solid theory, which suggested that a stressed solid would commence to flow as soon as the maximum shearing stress exceeded a limiting value, to provide a more complete understanding of rock behavior under various stresses.
