Excerpt from A Computer Program for Interpolation and Plotting of Isohyetal Points
An important part of the study and interpretation of rainfall records is the preparation of isohyetal maps. Such maps, showing lines of equal depth of rainfall, may be prepared for the total storm rainfall, for rainfall during selected time intervals within the storm, or for rainfall accumulated from a number of storms over a specified period of time such as a month, a season, or a year.
Manual preparation of isohyetal maps is tedious, time consuming, and subjective. The subjectivity is largely due to the interpretation of the original data by the person preparing the map. This is not entirely a disadvantage, since the number of rain-gaging stations is usually less than desirable for preparation of good isohyetal maps, and some human judgment is needed for the production of acceptable or reasonable maps, based on the insufficient data.
Some computer programs for the preparation and plotting of isohyetal maps are commercially available. The programs are, however, expensive both in terms of the initial investment needed to develop or to procure the program and in terms of the computer time needed for the preparation of an isohyetal map. One reason for the complexity and slowness of these programs is the need to provide for all possible combinations of deci sions that make up the factor referred to as human judgment.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. The book is a technical guide to using a computer to generate and plot rainfall data, specifically isohyetal points and contour maps. The method presented in the book can prepare numerous isohyetal maps faster and more accurately than manual plotting methods. The book's guidelines can be applied to any function that is related to spatial location. The computer program and all the equations, steps, and figures are included in detail. The author created this as a tool for practical use by professionals in relevant fields.
