Excerpt from The Co-Operative Movement, Its Principles, Policy, and Progress: An Address Delivered, at the Invitation of the Ontario Department of Agriculture, to the Annual Convention of the Ontario Bee-Keepers' Association, Held at Toronto on November 15th, 16th, and 17th, 1911
The historian Rollins tells us that while the laws of Minos, the lawgiver of the Cretans were observed in Crete that island was the abode of justice and vir tue, and it remained so for one thousand years] The children were all educated alike - their parents fed at the same table at the public expense towards which all were bound to contribute either by personal or substitute labor. No reason in history can be found for the decline and fall of this state of society although it has been suggested that the introduct ion of slavery was the cause of its ruin.
