Colonel Martin is a native of Oak Grove, LA, and a distinguished ROTC graduate of Grambling State University. In 2015, he retired from active duty after 30 honorable and highly decorated years of service. Over the course of his career, he earned a master’s degree from Webster University and the United States Army War College. He was the first African American selected to command the prestigious Defense Information School, the Department of Defense premier school for Public Affairs and Visual Information training. In 2015, he accepted an appointment to serve in the administration of the first African American president in the history of the United States, Barack Obama. He served as a senior executive on the staff of the Secretary of Defense, as Chief of Staff for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, while concurrently performing the duties of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Community and Public Outreach, and the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. Colonel Martin is number nine of eleven children. He enjoys Christian outreach, reading, exercising, volunteering in the community, and spending time with his lovely wife, Ava and family. “Vaulting Over Destiny” is based on the life and times of his hero, James T. Martin, Sr., his dad.
