Sinossi

Anyone who has looked out at the sea, a great lake, or a harbor has probably wondered about the ship on its horizon, guessing its origin or, perhaps, its destination. This innovative field guide shows how to instantly identify the type of vessel with more than 250 line drawings and detailed descriptions. Basnight outlines more than 96 types of boats and ships, from harbor tugs and bulk carriers to shrimp trawlers and brigantines, oil tankers, navy destroyers, halibut schooners, and every other ship currently plying oceans and waterways. Updated to reflect current changes in military ships, this is a fabulous field guide for boaters and coastal residents.

Dalla quarta di copertina

Who hasn't wondered, when looking out to sea, about the anonymous gray forms passing by. What kind of ship is it? Where is it going? What does it carry? What Ship Is That - the age-old hail between skippers meeting at sea - will satisfy these curiosities and more. An instant identification guide points out detailed drawings and descriptions that bring to life ninety-six types of ships, from aircraft carriers to bulk carriers, harbor tugs to shrimp trawlers, catboats to Americas Cup challengers. Basnight teaches the difference between a ship rig and a bark, a brig and a brigantine, a yawl and a ketch, and more. With the aid of over 250 drawings, readers see through an artist's eye the maritime world at work - fleet oilers refueling destroyers, container ships undergoing repairs, a heavily laden halibut schooner staggering back to port in heavy seas. This is an indispensable field guide for waterfront walkers everywhere. (9 X 6, 192 pages, illustrations)
