Naples, 1913. Sun-baked, blue-skied - one of the most beautiful spots in Italy, but also one of the most corrupt. A new arrival here is junior British consular official, Scampion, banished from Florence after allowing himself to get involved in the unorthodox world of D'Annunzio, the famous Italian poet, Nationalist and revolutionary.
Scampion brings with him a new craze that is sweeping Italy: bicycling. But one day as he walks home after a bicycle race, he is stabbed to death. Nothing extraordinary about that in Naples, it happens all the time - but remarkably his wallet was not taken. Could Scampion's murder have something to do with the race? It seems a harmless pursuit but Neapolitans are great gamblers; they'll bet on anything, including bicycle racing. And where there is gambling there is also the Camorra, the powerful Neapolitan secret society.
But the Foreign Office gets a tip-off that the murder might be linked to high politics in Rome. And that's when Seymour, our man from the FO, is sent out to investigate.

Michael Pearce was raised in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. He trained as a Russian interpreter but later moved to an academic career, first as a lecturer in English and the History of Ideas and then as an administrator. He now lives in South West London and is best known as the author of the award winning Mamur Zapt books.
