Condizione: Sehr gut. 197 p.; X. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, sonst sehr guter Zustand / Dust jacket somewhat rubbed, otherwise in very good condition. - The work of Friedrich Nietzsche is remarkable for the manner in which it resists and disrupts the Platonic philosophical tradition, illuminating the ways that language creates, defines, and deforms our perspective of being in the world. Focusing on Nietzsche's masterful use of diverse rhetorical strategic* and techniques, this pathbreaking book demonstrates that coming to terms with Nietzsche's style is central to understanding his thought. Thomas examines a range of primary texts to show how Nietzsche's provocative and playful use of language enables him to challenge accepted metaphysical truthsand to recover rhetoric itself as an alternative means of generating meaning and value. Studies of Nietzsche's style have traditionally been framed in philosophical terms, centering on the question of whether there is a coherence to Nietzsche's style that unifies his thought in a systemic way. This book takes a radically different approach, exploring how Nietzsche approaches philosophy from a distinctly rhetorical point of view. Thomas argues that Nietzsche rethinks philosophy through rhetoric, and in so doing illuminates the risks and benefits of living in a world of language rather than a world of truth. Chapters show how Nietzsche's use of language exposes the social construction of such moral values as goodness and justice; draws out the "dangerous" potential of rhetoric as a challenger of accepted beliefs; and gives rise to a rhetorical vision that allows us to see history and the future in new and potentially liberatory ways. Thomas further proposes that what Nietzsche demands of his readers is an interaction with his texts that goes beyond any surface level of meaning to the level of feeling, mood, and emotion. A concluding reading of The Birth of Tragedy illuminates the interelationship of art, language, and social organization in the Nietzschean economy of style. Helping to resituate Nietzsche's intellectual legacy within the broader context of contemporary rhetorical studies, this book will be read with pleasure by rhetoricians, undergraduate and graduate-level students of rhetoric, and Nietzsche scholars working within departments of philosophy and literature.
