Sinossi

Author Al Patterson started collecting vinyl in elementary school. He's since amassed a serious collection and deep knowledge of instrumental-only hip hop records. Some are 'performance' records that were pressed in very small numbers for use exclusively by the MC or group's DJ during live shows, while others were commercially released. These instrumental records, whether from the obscure depths of the underground or well-known hip hop acts, are cataloged alphabetically by artists and accompanied by a photograph of the record's label. Each entry specifies the artist, title, format, producer, label, year, and catalog number as well as notes and anecdotes about the disc.

Recensione

'With the likes of Earl Sweatshirt and Kendrick Lamar following the trend for 'surprise' online album drops back in March, it's perhaps easy to forget that hip-hop was once exclusively a vinyl construct. Not only were the records themselves released on wax, but the music on them was released from bits of other records, sampled and spliced together for MC's to rap over. Remove the vocals and you have, of course, the instrumentals. Stick these on a disc and you have the kind of records that Bay Area DJ Albert Patterson collects. Beats to the Rhyme is something of a connoisseur's bible, presenting a must-have assortment of instrumental LPs, ranging from the well known Instrumentalyst release for Dr.Octagoneocologyst, to lesser-known beat LPs from obscure Patterson favourites Scienz of Life. The promo and 'show vinyl' section is where things get really interesting.' -- Record Collector
