The PLA has officially been in existence for three-quarters of a century, and its history is one filled with turmoil and warfare. Laurie Burkitt is a Research Aide for the editorial board at the Washington Post. She has served as a research assistant in Asian studies at the American Enterprise Institute. In order to improve mine safety regulations in China, Ms. Burkitt reviewed grant proposals for the U.S. Department of Labor in the fall of 2002. Her experience in China ranges from teaching English to working at the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu. She received her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her M.A. from Columbia University.
