Ad-hoc and sensor networks have security problems built in. They are dynamic in topology, have severe resource constraints, and as yet lack trusted infrastructures. This special issue includes six papers that offer solutions to these problems, including using Bayesian approaches to build trustworthiness into mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) by having nodes form opinions of each other, conducting threat analyses in vehicular networks through appropriate security architecture, applying a framework for secure information aggregation in large sensor networks through random sampling and interactive proofs, detecting and preventing node misbehavior through an algorithm that ensures honest behavior by participants, making up for the vulnerability of legitimate group members in communication schemes used by both MANETs and wired networks, and applying a signature protocol that prevents adversaries from forging signatures or disrupting computation.
