Sinossi

This collection represents papers presented during the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on security issues held in Tbilisi, Georgia, in March 2007. Contributors in various scientific and technical fields respond to the perception that the world is both complex and insecure--a situation that probably endangers human progress, and perhaps even jeopardizes the survival of the species. Reducing the impact of the matrix requires first the recognition of complexity in the analysis of a situation, then the implementation of complex solutions into an already complex environment. The studies explore such topics as the socio-physics of terrorism, the representation of complexity, soil as a paradigm of a complex system, climate change and the complexity of energy supply solutions, the problems of protecting people in underground structures from terrorist explosions, coupled critical infrastructures, why governments and companies invest in science and technology, and the complexity of the economic transition in eastern Europe. The collection was edited by Ramsden (Cranfield U., United Kingdom) and Kervalishvili (Georgian Technical U., Georgia) and includes contributions from 28 authors.
