Mostly European contributors to a dozen chapters illuminate key aspects of the rapidly proliferating field of environmental microbiology, e.g. the development and application of techniques that facilitate the identification, characterization, and monitoring of genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs). Later chapters outline regulatory aspects governing risk assessment of GMMs prior to field release, and give examples of the use of biomarkers described earlier to track specific GMMs during field trial experiments. Includes illustrations of protocols and outcomes. The lead editor is with the department of biochemistry at Stockholm U.
