Karl W. Dennis is one of the country's pioneers and leading experts in providing community-based care for the "hardest-to-serve" children and families through Wraparound services, theraputic foster care, pediatric AIDS care, independent living, and long-term intensive family preservation services. Ira S. Lourie, MD, a child psychiatrist, is a currently a partner in the Human Service Collaborative, which provides consultation, technical assistance, and training in human service policy and service system development.
Wraparound, or individualized services, is rooted in the principles of individualized, community-based, strengths-focused services. In Everything is Normal Until Proven Otherwise, Karl Dennis, the former director of the Chicago-area agency Kaleidoscope, offers stories from his expereinces with youth and families of Kaleidoscope. Ira Lourie, a psychiatrist, offers commentary on these stories, and how each one illustrates one of the following central tenents of the Wraparound approach. Along the way, the authors also explore how the Wraparound concept became the expression of case-level service delivery within a federal program as it attempted to change the way states and communities delivered services. Perfect for parents, policymakers, and administrators and workers in child welfare, juvenile justice, education, and mental health systems, Everything is Normal Until Proven Otherwise demonstrates the change that can occur when systems give families the chance to become equal partners in their care.
