This volume is the result of a search by Callaway (political science, Sam Houston State U.) and Harrelson-Stephens (political science, Stephen F. Austin U.) for accessible articles to use in their introductory courses on international human rights that address the main themes and tensions of the field. They have selected 35 papers for presentation in sections on definitions and foundations of human rights, quantitative measures of human rights, international law and organizations in the fight for human rights, debates over the universality of human rights, first hand experiences of torture and ill-treatment, gender-based repression, children as targets, globalization and human rights, and human rights in the "War on Terror."
