Martinás (Eötvös Loránd U., Hungary), Matika (Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Croatia), and Srbljinovic (also of the Croatian Defense Ministry) present 20 papers summarizing results of presentations and discussions at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop dedicated to exploring approaches for dealing with complex societal dynamics and their implications for security. Topics include the social construction of security issues, the application of complexity science to evidence-based policy making, the complexities of counter-terrorism coordination and cooperation among the European Union member states and between the European Union and NATO, the failure of neoclassical economics to account for complexity in human economic behavior, the role of the group structures of sub-Saharan societies in determining productivity and income distribution, theoretical approaches to social conflict, agent-based models of social conflict over water resources, the use of "extreme events" for the validation of social simulation models, simulation modeling of phase transitions in numbers of passive supporters of terrorism, anthropological modeling of human interactional networks in virtual worlds, the use of web data mining tools for information retrieval from complex data sources such as virtual learning environments and news feeds, the value of including ecological variables in economic models of environmental regulatory policy, and possible social threats arising out of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
