Riassunto

Space exploration has, from its beginning, been a highly political enterprise. In the United States it began in 1957 with the "Sputnik moment" when the Soviet Union had successfully put the world's first artificial satellite into Earth's orbit. The events which followed in the US, including the establishment of NASA, led to massive technological advances and achievements. However, after a spate of activity in the 1970s, space exploration by the US slowed. This survey, edited by Maguire, presents assessments of space exploration over the next 50 years. The articles presented are drafted by the Congressional Budget Office, U.S. Government Accountability Office, administrators and policy makers, and experts in space exploration policy.
