Sinossi

"The first edition of Interpretive Description established itself as the key resource for novice and intermediate level researchers in applied settings for conducting a qualitative research project with practical outcomes. In the second edition, leading qualitative researcher Sally Thorne retains the clear, straightforward guidance for researchers and students in health, social service, mental health, and related fields. This new edition includes additional material on knowledge synthesis and integration, evidence-based practice, and data analysis. In addition, this book -takes the reader through the qualitative research process, from research design through fieldwork, analysis, interpretation, and application of the results; -provides numerous examples from a variety of applied fields to show research in action; -uses an accessible style and affordable price to be the ideal book for teaching qualitative research in clinical and applied disciplines"--

Review

"With the publication of Interpretive Description, researchers now have access to a highly readable, practically oriented, and more comprehensive discussion of how (and why) to design, conduct, and transmit research using this methodological approach. As a result, researchers will be better equipped to implement an interpretive description."
--Matthew R. Hunt, Qualitative Health Research

"Thorne has developed this research method over many years in order to combat what she sees as a fundamental difference between social science research and applied health research.... Unlike other qualitative methods, the focus on multidisciplinarity, using mixed theories and methods, and the demystification of certain stages of the research process, make this book particularly useful for those wanting to apply their research to real world problems."
--Ruth Bridgens, Qualitative Research

The text takes the reader through the journey of a research project
that will in the end produce an interpretive description of a clinically relevant issue or topic that can change practice . The dual message of flexibility and rigor in designing, undertaking, and communicating findings from a project is key for all researchers who aspire to address complex issues, no matter how experienced and regardless of applied or pure leanings .I have found it useful already in supervising graduate practitioner students who struggle to marry a credible research project with a passion and commitment to practical and political questions relating to health care. The book is also useful for those who consider themselves experienced practitioners of research applied to health care, as the way the message is put across is refreshing and clear and reminds us that each research project is a completely new journey that has to be undertaken with a fresh outlook. About the Author

My substantive research has been primarily in the fields of chronic illness and cancer experience and relational aspects of health service delivery within these illness contexts. I am intrigued by the complexity of the challenge associated with ensuring that all patients receive the information and support they require in order to live as well as possible despite these conditions. I work with health care professionals, health service decision makers, and patient advocacy groups to find better ways to assist patients in navigating health care systems and negotiating for the health supports they require. My research has focused particular attention on the insights that health care consumers contribute to our understanding of ideological and structural barriers within our current systems of service delivery. Toward this end, I also work on methodological options toward ensuring that experiential knowledge obtained from consumer perspective research is appropriately designed to be useful within an evidence-oriented health care planning context.
