Riassunto

What drives a boy from Rumford, Maine to become one of the most respected defensemen in international hockey history?

Global Goals: The International Hockey Life of U.S. Defenseman Eric Weinrich is a compelling biography of Eric “Weino” Weinrich, who played over 1,000 NHL games and represented Team USA in more international hockey tournaments than any other American player. This meticulously researched book blends sports history, Cold War diplomacy, and personal memoir into one unforgettable narrative.

Written by historian Andy DeRoche, with exclusive contributions from Weinrich himself in each chapter’s “Weino’s Wisdom,” this book offers rare insight into Weinrich’s development from backyard pond skater to Olympic hockey player, NHL star, and cultural ambassador. Follow his rise through North Yarmouth Academy, the University of Maine Black Bears, and the 1988 Winter Olympics, all the way to professional stints with the New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, and beyond.

Through detailed storytelling and historical context, Global Goals captures how Weinrich’s hockey career mirrored shifting U.S. and USSR relations. Readers also gain an intimate view of Weinrich’s friendships with former Soviet stars like Alexei Kasatonov and his role in bridging cultural divides during a tense global era.

This hockey biography is essential for fans of NHL history, Olympic hockey, Cold War sports diplomacy, and readers who love stories of grit, growth, and global ambition.
