Riassunto

In 1902 New York, Alice Roosevelt, the bright, passionate, and wildly unconventional daughter of newly sworn-in President Theodore Roosevelt, is placed under the supervision of Secret Service Agent Joseph St. Clair, ex-cowboy and veteran of the Rough Riders. St. Clair quickly learns that half his job is helping Alice roll cigarettes and escorting her to bookies, but matters grow even more difficult when Alice takes it upon herself to investigate a recent political killing—the assassination of former president William McKinley.

Concerned for her father's safety, Alice seeks explanations for the many unanswered questions about the avowed anarchist responsible for McKinley's death. In her quest, Alice drags St. Clair from grim Bowery bars to the elegant parlors of New York's ruling class, from the haunts of the Chinese secret societies to the magnificent new University Club, all while embarking on a tentative romance with a family friend, the son of a prominent local household.

And while Alice, forced to challenge those who would stop at nothing in their greed for money and power, considers her uncertain future, St. Clair must come to terms with his own past in Alice and the Assassin, the first in R. J. Koreto's riveting new historical mystery series.

Praise for R. J. Koreto:
"Koreto's second case for his titled heroine is devilishly clever and written with unmistakable verve."

--Library Journal on Death on the Sapphire

"Lady Frances is a strong, clever protagonist, in the mold of Frances Brody s Kate Shackleton and Jacqueline Winspear s Maisie Dobbs."
--Booklist on Death on the Sapphire

"Fans of both Downton Abbey and Agatha Christie will embrace the subtly witty, refreshingly unconventional heroine in Koreto's debut series."
--RT Book Reviews on Death on the Sapphire

?An intelligent and engrossing historical novel with an wonderfully independent heroine (of the right social class!) and her enterprising maid. But it is by no means a cozy story, delving into the grim realities of war.
--Rhys Bowen, New York Times bestselling author of the Molly Murphy and Royal Spyness mysteries on Death on the Sapphire

?R. J. Koreto introduces a delightful new heroine with Lady Frances Ffolkes. Everyone underestimates Lady Frances and usually to their dismay. You ll love reading about her adventures as she takes time out from her efforts in the Women s Suffrage movement to solve the murder of an old friend.
--Victoria Thompson, bestselling author of Murder in Morningside Heights on Death on the Sapphire

?What a fun read, good storytelling that whisks along at a cracking pace, neatly plotted with a satisfying ending. Lady Frances Ffolkes is irresistible--caring, clever and resourceful. I look forward to meeting her again many times.
--M.R.C. Kasasian, author of the Gower Street Detective series on Death on the Sapphire
