Wicked problems seem to be popping up everywhere. Revising organizational strategies in the face of a rapidly changing digital world, orchestrating emergency responses to hurricanes like Maria in Puerto Rico, attenuating the threatening aspects of climate change, and those everyday challenges found at work, at home, and in relationships are just some of the problems that are complex, display some degree of novelty, and confront lots of uncertainty in nature of these challenges let alone their solutions. They are wicked.Unfortunately, problem-solving efforts to resolve wicked problems often fall short. All too often the wrong problem is solved and then thinkers must circle back and start over wasting time and money all the while increasing frustration and finger-pointing. Indeed, some research indicates that even the best leaders in corporate America end up solving the wrong problem more than 75% of the time. How can the “right” problem be found so that wicked problems can be solved efficiently and effectively the first time? The Art of Diagnosis offers a set of methods for figuring out or formulating the right problem the first time. It defines thinking as well as critical thinking. More importantly, it identifies a common set of biases and impediments get in the way of diagnosing and formulating problems (also known as challenges, issues, situations, etc.). Impediments include jumping to a solution as well as framing and anchoring biases that end up providing solutions to old problems, not new wicked ones. Ego preservation, another key impediment, stimulates confirmation bias, self-interest, and self-justification that further hide and camouflage the real challenge. These impediments obstruct our ability to comprehensively diagnose and formulate problems. How then can these impediments be overcome? The monograph introduces a basic thinking process (called Individual Inquiry or I2) as a thinking process that guides how to comprehensively formulate problems. Then, to handle increasingly wicked problems, The Art of Diagnosis introduces several more advanced thinking processes (called U+ and PPPICACC). These processes help thinkers overcome biases and impediments to figure out the right problem the first time even when the problems are wicked. While thinking processes can improve diagnosis and problem formulation, reflection offers another valuable tool to advance thinking and overcome impediments. Reflection can help reprogram—or, more precisely, add new heuristics—to train how one thinks. Based on recent advances in brain science, the Aperio Examen is designed to offer a reflection methodology to accelerate the discovery and creation of heuristics that can fundamentally change one’s thinking ability in as little as two weeks. The Art of Diagnosis is a compact and practical guide for anyone who wants to improve their ability to tackle wicked problems. The monograph provides a set of processes that will help thinkers comprehensively formulate and increase the likelihood of solving wicked problems the first time.
