Friction stir welding (FSW) is a recent technique in welding that uses a rotating welding tool to generate frictional heat and plastic deformation at the welding location, resulting in the formation of a joint while the material is in the solid state. Aluminium alloys are widely used in industry because of better corrosion resistance and high electrical and thermal conductivity.In this research, the friction stir welding of dissimilar aluminium alloy plates(AA6061 & AA6082) of 6 mm thickness was investigated. Experimental conditions were determined and the welding technique was applied to plates at different rotational speeds of 800, 1100 and 1400 rpm by varying the welding speeds i.e. 120, 150 and 180 mm/min and tool profiles(cylindrical threaded and taper threaded). Hardness, tensile and microstructure tests were done on the obtained welded joints and the results had been analysed using Taguchi L9 technique.It was concluded from the present study that the tensile strength is mostly affected by tool rotational speed .Confirmation experiment shows that error(%) associate with tensile strength is 4.03 .Tensile test samples mostly failed in the region of lowest hardness on 6082 side. Optimal setting of process parameters for tensile strength is 1400rpm, 120mm/min with cylindrical threaded tool(TPI-22).
