Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1897, "Capitani coraggiosi" segue le avventure di Harvey Cheyne, un giovane viziato e ricco che viene accidentalmente lavato in mare da un transatlantico di lusso e viene salvato dal capitano portoghese di una barca da pesca e dal suo duro equipaggio di scarabeo. Kipling, attingendo alle sue esperienze che vivono nel Vermont, riempie questa classica storia di formazione con dettagli d"epoca della pesca americana della fine del diciannovesimo secolo, balene, e viaggi in ferrovia.
